Good Night,
I was watching The Corporation (http://www.thecorporation.com/) this week and it's a good film that could give a different point of view about the responsibilities within corporations (or organizations).
The Question at this time is...
Do you think corporations are the root cause of the problem, or is it consumerism, capitalism, or all three?
For your information the film says that the cause of many problems around world is about the bad behaviors from the corporations and their value of "always looking for money".
Well, it's no so easy to say that...Just imagine for a second.
You are a business management student and you get a great idea of starting a new business in town. Ok, your business is about selling typical clothes from the Americas (just as an example). You open your business and you start working at. 1 year after your business has grown and you have 2 stores. 5 years after your business is a big business in all the country and it's conformed by several managers (marketing, human resources, financing, design and others...). Also, you start to contract a lot of employees as sellers, in the shipping area and management.
Now, your business is a big organization, but this would not happen if your product did not have demand from the consumers.
You start to get a lot of money, so you have to think in what else you could invest that money and get more money every day...
The previous example could be a little and bad one about the start of an organization. But that's the way of how a business starts.
Now, somebody says that it's vey bad for the humans the creation of the Corporation.
I dont think so...i think that is a natural process, because the human has to survive within a big economy and a globalized world. You have to get money to eat, study, live, travel, for all the things you need and want you have to get money.
Maybe, when the corporations grow and make more and more money and they start a financial race about who gets more and who has more power to control the market and the economy is when the problem starts.
But, just say that the corporations are the root cause of the problem? consumerism or capitalism?
First, we can not live without corporations, cause they are source of work and economy.
Second, always is going to be consumerism
Third, not only in the capitalism model there are corporations. Within the socialism the Government has corporations, the Government is a corporation.
So, the problem is not made by corporations, the problem starts when the people change the conception of having money and managing a lot of money and power. The human always wants more and more...And if nobody could control this, always is going to happen.
In my concept the fount of problem are the laws and rules that control the corporations and the interest that the Governors have in that kind of business.
Dave.

although the point of view is good, I think it’s not the problematic spoken of the film, obviously for a business grow and be successful is not bad, bad thing is when you do anything for that business grow and fortifying most, like run over employees, the environment and society surrounding the company itself. as seen in the movie, the great defect of the corporations is that they think they have a power even higher than the state, therefore do not respect rules on different aspects such as environmental standards, recruitment and some obligations to the community that may be affected by the practices of a company. Also the problem is when these companies become so large, his only goal becomes to produce more, at lower cost, which means sometimes you do not use appropriate means of production, or lower product quality , among other things.
I like your realist position about the role that corporations play in our societies. They don´t have just bad things, they are fundamental for human beings’ development.
I think a positive aspect of this blog is your effort to exemplify all the ideas that you develop, I find that very interesting
Hi:
I agree with your position, Corporations are important for humans to live well, everyone needs medicines, or milk, or meat, I don't know, so much things we need.
But I really find a problem when people, in charge of the corporations, go beyond their power, and the greed for money blurs their moral values, and usally violate and do harm to certain parts of society they don't care of, because they only want their stakeholders to be happy, even if the rest of the society is harmed.
Nice blog dave ;)
